Filipino for Kids Summer Program 2009

PRESS RELEASE

“Filipino for Kids” summer 2009
to expose students to different regional groups

Filipino for Kids, an annual summer cultural enrichment program, will once again be offered on June 20 & 27, July 4, 11 & 18, 2009, 8:30 am - 12:00 pm at the Filipino Community Center in Waipahu. This year’s theme “Tara na, Biyahe Tayo!” [Come on, Let’s Travel!” will introduce and expose students to several Philippine regions [Ilocos, Bicol and Visayan] and learn basic expressions, songs, and other cultural highlights from those regions.

Now on its 4th year, Filipino for Kids is a summer program designed to provide elementary school-age children of ALL ethnic backgrounds an opportunity to learn about the rich Philippine culture and heritage. The program includes language and culture components and interactive activities such as games, dances, and songs and a summer reading program. Last year’s 32 students learned about Escrima, Philippine martial arts; Carinosa, the Philippine national folk dance; Sipa, the Philippine national sport and Alibata, the Philippine ancient script. Students also enjoyed other activities including making their own halo-halo, folding/coloring jeepney, and dancing the malong dance.

Started through a mini-diversity grant from the UH SEED office. Filipino for Kids Summer Program has now become an annual summer collaborative project of the Filipino Community Center, University of the Philippines Alumni Association-Hawaii Chapter, UH Filipino and Philippine Literature program, the UH Katipunan Club, Alumni and Friends, and community volunteers.

Registration is $40 per student for all five Saturdays [which includes a program T-shirt] and is limited to the first 25 students who will sign-up. For more information about the Filipino for Kids, please check out http://filipinoforkids.blogspot.com/. For registration, please email Filipino for Kids Hawaii [HI] at fil4kidsHI@gmail.com.

Filipino for Kids Summer Program 2008 Evaluation

Maraming salamat for allowing your kids to participate in our Filipino for Kids Summer Program. Please take some time to leave comments evaluating the program. What activities did your kids enjoy the most? Why? And what activities did your kids enjoy the least? Why? What other lessons/topics/activities would you like to include in our program? What about the schedule? Is is too short? too early? What about the location or facility? Is registration just right or too much? Would you recommend this program to other families? Please let us know your ideas so we can improve the program next time. You can choose to be anonymous when you leave or post your comment. Again, maraming salamat!
