“Filipino for Kids” summer program to offer fun cultural activities
Filipino for Kids, an annual summer cultural enrichment program, will once again be offered for five Saturdays on June 16, 23, 30, July 7 & 14, 2011, 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. at the Filipino Community Center in Waipahu.
Now on its 7th year, Filipino for Kids is a summer program designed to provide elementary school-age children of ALL ethnic backgrounds an opportunity to learn about the rich Philippine culture and heritage. The program includes language and culture components and interactive activities such as games, dances, and songs and a summer reading program. In previous summer programs, students learned about Tinikling; the Philippines’ most popular folk dance; Escrima, Philippine martial arts; Carinosa, the Philippine national dance; Sipa, formerly known as the Philippine national sport and Alibata or Baybayin, the Philippine ancient script; and Philippine national hero Jose Rizal. Students also enjoyed other activities including making their own halo-halo, folding/coloring jeepney, and dancing the malong dance from southern Philippines in Mindanao.
Started through a mini-diversity grant from the UH SEED office in 2005. Filipino for Kids Summer Program has now become an annual summer collaborative project of the Filipino Community Center, University of the Philippines Alumni Association-Hawaii Chapter, UH Filipino and Philippine Literature program, the UH Katipunan Club, Alumni and Friends, and community organizations and volunteers.
Registration is $25 per student for all five Saturdays [with an additional $10 for a program T-shirt] and is limited to the first 25 students who will sign-up. Participants who will complete five Saturdays will receive a Certificate of Participation and a “My Filipino Alphabet Workbook.” Last year’s highlight was a new collaboration with Jollibee: food and goodies were given to participants with the Jollibee mascot assisting in awarding certificates to the participants.

to expose students to different regional groups
Filipino for Kids, an annual summer cultural enrichment program, will once again be offered on June 20 & 27, July 4, 11 & 18, 2009, 8:30 am - 12:00 pm at the Filipino Community Center in Waipahu. This year’s theme “Tara na, Biyahe Tayo!” [Come on, Let’s Travel!” will introduce and expose students to several Philippine regions [Ilocos, Bicol and Visayan] and learn basic expressions, songs, and other cultural highlights from those regions.
